Let’s discover Elie Matar, EnvIM student World option
” We must lead the way in protecting our environment and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Where are you from Elie ?
My name is Elie Matar, I am a 24-year-old engineer born and raised in a small yet beautiful village by the sea in Lebanon. I pursued my studies in civil engineering at Notre Dame University-Louaize in Lebanon, where I acquired both technical and non-technical skills. Throughout my life, I have always been passionate about making the world a better place, both socially and environmentally.
Witnessing the rise of pollution and the drastic effects of climate change in Lebanon as well as all around the world has made me realize the urgency of addressing these issues. I believe it is our responsibility to mitigate and stop these effects. To contribute meaningfully, I decided to shift my career towards the environmental sector, combining all my skills to make a positive impact on the world.
What are your main motivations for this Post Master application ?
Wanting to transition my career into the environmental sector, I chose the EnvIM program because of its comprehensive and diverse approach to sustainability. This program stood out to me as it covered all aspects of sustainability from various perspectives, precisely what I was seeking. I believed, and it was proven correct, that such a program would help me acquire new skills that I could later apply in my professional career.
I was further motivated by the success stories of alumni who graduated from this program and went on to become leaders in their respective fields. The diversity and professionalism of the program, the prestigiousness of the university, and the inspiring achievements of its graduates were significant factors in my decision.
Moreover, and what I didn’t anticipate back then was the incredible opportunity to meet amazing and talented individuals from different backgrounds. This diversity of Envim-ers has enriched my learning experience, making every moment of the program insightful, enjoyable and fun.
What are your professional goals and career project ?
Learning never stops in the environmental sector, and that’s what I look forward to the most. I am committed to continuously growing and evolving in this field to become a reliable expert. I have a particular interest in the waste management sector and aim to specialize in this area. However, my curiosity extends beyond this, and I am open to exploring various environmental careers that cover different aspects of helping the environment and fighting climate change. My goal is to develop a deep understanding and expertise that will allow me to contribute significantly to sustainability efforts and drive positive change in whichever path my curiosity leads me.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to have a job that contributes to making the world a better place. Every day, you get to be part of the solution, creating positive change and shaping a sustainable future.”

Portrait d’étudiant EnvIM option World
Let’s discover Clémentine Pelissier, EnvIM student World option
I wanted to find something that would make sense to me, a place where I could use the things I learned while being in accordance with my own values and sensibilities.
1. Where are you from Clémentine ?
I grew up in Antibes, South East of France and left for Toulouse to study bioengineering at the INSA (National Institute of Applied Sciences). As any young people leaving high school (after a scientific baccalauréat for myself), I was not perfectly sure where I wanted to go, and I did not have a “professional project of becoming a biological engineer since I was five”.
However, I have always been fascinated about the power of nature, of life, and how all of this is working, starting from DNA to end up with such complex and various things as a human being or trees. So this is basically how I ended up doing these 5 years at INSA Toulouse from which I just graduated as Biological Engineer.
There, I have been learning all the fundamentals of molecular biology, metabolism, genetics, microbiology, enzymology and various topics in process engineering, as well as basics in management, business or communication for instance.
Taking part in various associations made me realize how much I like to be implied in projects that I care about, or how far a team can go by exchanging and learning from each other but also what I can do myself by simply being highly motivated and willing to learn always more.
After graduating, I started following the usual track and looked for a job. The main point was to find a way to somehow help the environment, work on topics related not only to biology but more to biodiversity and ecology. I studied life for all it has to teach us, for its broad diversity and its beauty. Therefore, it only made sense to me to somehow work on preserving it. But sustainability is not only about fighting for a plant specie endangered, this is much more complex. It is about considering the whole world, humanity as well. It is about understanding the complex balance between what we need, what we can have, and what we must preserve. This is about being able to provide Men with food, energy, transports, accommodations, to keep developing but without destroying.
This is about ensuring a safe future to the next generations, in a world as rich as we yet know it, and not on a dying planet.
2. What are your main motivations for this Post Master application ?
I studied biology because I’ve always been fascinated by the complexity and diversity of all life forms. Therefore, after studying life in space during my end-of-study internship, it appeared to me that I should first work at protecting life on Earth. I wanted to acquire real knowledge in environmental management and discover the various fields of application where I could find a job that makes sense to me. In the end, to really be able to act on this front, I felt I needed to learn much more on the global topic of environment.
On top of that, it appears highly consistent to me to learn about this in an international context, transition being a worldwide matter. I want to feel ready to exchange and deal with people from other countries and other cultures.
My professional project being with time to work as a project manager. I also wanted to develop my management skills, including decision making or project and team management. I believed the variety of experts’ background taking part in the formation could also help me in choosing a direction regarding the kind of structure I want to work in.
I certainly acquired some expertise in the biology field, but I did feel that I lacked knowledge in environment, ecology and biodiversity to achieve my personal goals.
This is what this program brought me, as well as an additional opening onto the world and its societal challenges. I wanted to feel more aware on all the key elements that go with the transition, and learn more about energies, climate, laws and regulations regarding the environment or the social and economic side of the transition for instance. The EnvIM program gave me the tools I needed to then evolve by myself in the field I care about. Finally, I also loved the fact that learning took place in the form of team work on many study cases and projects.
I very much liked the idea of interacting with students from various backgrounds and countries, illustrating perfectly the context in which I should evolve later.
3. What are your professional goals and career project ?
My professional goal now is first to work in favor of the environment, directly or indirectly. I want to find a way to combine my knowledge and interest for biology to my environmental values. Currently an intern at Egis in environmental consultancy, I would like to specialize in ecology consultancy to work on biodiversity protection, through species inventories and the development and application of ARC measures.
I want to work in something that makes sense and that can somehow have an impact.

Shifting to Product Service System in the sport sector ?
Shifting to Product Service System in the sport sector ?
EnviM students were offered the opportunity to study two lines of products of Decathlon France, in the objective of renting instead of selling toward product service system with the challenge of having less products manufactured, and less impacts on the environment.

During the project students practiced on these two real cases, discussing with the experts of this company :
– How improving the lifespan of products, reducing the impact on the environment.
– What products suit these new models, what organization does this suppose for the company and what are the limits today ?
Beginning of May they present their findings and gave recommendations, adressing the advantages and limits for climbing Crashpad and Horse riding safety jackets.
A time for debate and conclude with Simond and Fouganza Decathlon teams, rich for both sides.
Thanks to Lucile Cazaux project manager at Decathlon France, Corentin Cuvelier, Giorgio Leonardi, Eponine Bottineau on the Fouganza Decathlon side, Jean-Charles Laugt, Alice de La Fabergue for Simond.
Thanks Rémi Beulque Ph.D for having co-designed and managed this project for the EnvIM students.

The city of Ris-Orangis’ deep and effective commitment for ecological transition.
The city of Ris-Orangis’ deep and effective commitment for ecological transition.
On 4 May 4th, students of the EnvIM World post-Master, discovered the projects developed for the ecological transition of Ris-Orangis with Gil Melin, Deputy Mayor in charge of the Eco-Polis and participative democracy, President of the familly gardens of l’Orme Pomponne.

After a general presentation of the city, its projects and an overview of the city’s Climate – Air – Energy policy, drawn up by Gil Melin, the students were offered a tour of the city.

Wandering in the city with Mr Melin and Axel OMS, helped them to comprehend the issues at stake regarding the policy implementation ont the field, the organization, financial aspects and coordination of the many projects with the citizens and involved stakeholders :
– The Family Gardens of the Orme Pomponne, an area of 6 Ha
– The Ecoquartier des Docks de Ris, one of the starting projects for the ecological awareness of the city of Ris-Orangis
– The “Berges de Seine”, the project of a marina, river shuttle and swimming area
– The third place “L’Attribut”, role for social networks, at the very core of the city
– The deep geothermal boreholes, plant, which supply the city’s urban heating network
– Urban agriculture, the challenges of soil preservation

The students discovered all the actions carried out in favour of biodiversity, wastelands and re-naturalisation of soils, and the studies and actions towards Zero Net Artificialization, within the framework of the Climate and Resilience Act of 2021.
Thank you to Gil Melin for his presentation and his investment and thanks to Axel OMS for having organized this day with us.

Voyage d’étude EnvIM 2023
Focus on the agroecology module of the post-master International Environmental Management EnvIM from ISIGE Mines Paris-PSL.
After a week of theoretical courses in Paris about the challenges of developping new models of agriculture to feed 10 billion people in 2050, EnvIM students left for a field trip at Arvieu in Aveyron, with Milena Till, consultant in agro-ecological and solidarity transition.

Housed at the Château d’Arvieu, the students were warmly welcomed by the team of the Jardin d’Arvieu, a very dynamic third place located in the heart of the village. Around the co-working spaces, the Zone d’Activité Numérique (Digital Activity Zone) welcomes computer companies, offers spaces for a business incubator but also for the citizens, with its auditoriums, its media library and its park.
– A true laboratory of resilience where diversity is mixed with talent.
Located near the lake of Pareloup at an altitude of 800m, the countryside around the village of Arvieu allows the discovery of sustainable agricultural practices such as Sarah Monza’s conservation and regenerative farming, semi-direct agriculture, organic farming for sheep’s milk production, but also the direct promotion of local products by the “Loco-motivés” network.
Finally, the trip ended with a visit to an agroforestry research site of the INRAE in Restinclières.

– These visits allowed the discovery and discussion of a range of practices and new models, without dogma, in order to highlight the diversity of possible solutions, their benefits for the soil, biodiversity, for the daily life of farmers and for the local economy.
A look back at this immersive stay, an sucessful experience of a sustainable way of life in a rural and dynamic community.
Transition is one of the main topic developed this year, studyed at various scale, from local to international by means of projects on real case studies offered by our parteners.
It will be soon up to them to take these topics into their future careers.
Thanks to all the speakers and to Milena Till for organizing this trip.
